What Ayurveda has to do with Coaching?

Ayurveda literally means “the science of life,” and it represents the oldest complex medical system about healthy lifestyle principles. Coaching is about unlocking a person’s potential to maximize their own performance.

Ayurveda looks upon the human being as an indivisible and mutually interconnected complex of body, vital energy, mind and soul. It does not focus on symptoms themselves, but mostly on the causes of psychosomatic imbalance, which precedes every disease. A symptom is regarded only as a signal or warning that there is something wrong with the body and that a deeper level of correction is needed.

Very simply put, coaching is a process that aims to improve performance and focuses on the ‘here and now’ rather than on the distant past or future.

Ayurveda is based on the belief that health and wellness depend on a delicate interconnections between the mind, body, and spirit. It states that a balance of the three life forces that control our body work, called doshas, equals health, while imbalance equals disease. Everyone inherits a unique mix of the three doshas. One dosha is usually more dominant and each one controls a different body function.

So, what really Ayurveda has to do with Coaching?
Accordingly to Ayurveda, every human being is born with a unique proportion of biologic principles (doshas) – vata, pitta, kapha – representing the individual genetic code which takes part in the forming of our mental and physical characteristics. During the course of life, the dosha proportions deviate from its original state for various reasons and subsequently, it has an impact on our mental and physical health condition.

Coaches believe that we are unique beings and that we all have everything we need to reach our goals, that we are all born with a unique purpose and that when we manage to align our actions with our thoughts and our values, together with our Essence, in harmony with the world around us, then we can achieve what we want.

In order to get there, you can walk shoulder to shoulder with a coach to get clarity on who you are, what you are here to express, what are your goals and why they are so important for you. Through a coaching program, you can also get clarity on what are your internal and external resources and strengths, your talents, your unique gifts and what do we need in order to tap into them and use them to thrive.

Ayurveda was born more than 5.000 years ago from the ancient wisdom and it is regarded as ‘the mother of all medical systems.’ Ayurveda represents a holistic and simple form of healing approach.

We can therefore understand that the origin of modern coaching can be tracked really long ago, its nature can be considered a mixture of different ancient approaches and wisdom that have been at service of the human evolution and still are nowadays.

Coaching is really strategic and so important, nowadays more than ever!

As ICF (International Coaching Federation) says ‘What the world needs right now is a few more coaches. Coaching is all about helping people make positive changes. So the more people coaching touches, the more positive the world can be.’ take a look at this link

You can achieve so much by simply working with a professional life coach or business coach.
In the Ayurveda approach, health is considered an optimal state of harmonious body functioning. It represents the balance between three biological principles (vata, pitta, kapha) according to the original condition (vikrti), bodily tissues and their functions, sensory organs, the mind and psychic consciousness.

The International Coach Federation (ICF) defines coaching as partnering with clients in a thought-provoking and creative process that inspires them to maximize their personal and professional potential. When we function in harmony with what we are, with who we are and with the world, we manage to manifest our highest dreams!
For many, coaching is a life-changing experience that dramatically improves their outlook on work and life while improving leadership skills. And that is because coaching helps people tap into their potential, unlocking sources of creativity and productivity.

Individuals who partner with coaches have reported several benefits, due to the fact that coaching really helps you to align with who you truly are, to re-calibrate your choices and to regain balance by letting your mind (your thoughts), your body (your actions) and your soul (your essence) move in harmony.

Right like in Ayurveda, yes, and right like in every ancient wisdom approach to human evolution and human understanding.

Moreover, talking about ancient wisdom, Hermes Trismegistus in his Kybalion (download here the free book) said ‘The possession of knowledge, unless expressed in action or manifestation, is a vain and foolish thing. Knowledge is intended for use.’

So coaching is about getting clarity through awareness, is about reconnecting with who we are and with our deep values in order to make conscious choices. But coaching is so much also about taking action!
In order to manifest what we want in our life, in what we call ‘the matter’, which is nothing but energy, we need to understand how the Laws of the Universe work and we need to dance at their rythm.

That’s why not only our thoughts and our inner self need to connect and communicate with each other, but also our body (action) needs to move in harmony with them. Coaching is about takin action. Clients who enter a coaching session (or a coaching program) with a professional coach, they end up with new awareness, they open new paths and new perspectives, and most of all they have an action plan.

The behavior and manners of a regular man are determined by his desires and wishes, which reside in the mind. Ayurveda says that most ailments first come from the mind before they manifest on the physical plane. Successful ayurvedic therapy above all depends on our willingness to change some of our present habits and stereotypes, because they often initiate our health problems. Right attitude, strong and determination to tackle our health problems, are the foundation stone of success.

And this is how coaching works!
The professional coach, through the process of a coaching conversation, can allow you to use your mind and your heart to elevate your level of consciousness and to move real steps towards your goals.
And like in Ayurveda, coaching helps you to be aware of how much you are connected to the others and the Universe. There is no separation between Nature and you. A key ayurvedic concept is that of the fundamental union between macrocosm (the whole Universe) and the microcosm (the Universe within you).

We have all the tools available, we can pursue our wholeness and our well-being by following the approach of the millenary tradition – coaching included! – that is here to allow the human beings to raise themselves to a higher dimension.
