What if you could turn your greatest challenges into your most powerful strengths?
This question lies at the heart of Farah Jamil’s Coach “Unlocking ADHD: Coaching for Neurodiversity Success” Community of Practice, promoted by the International Coaching Federation (ICF), now available in the ICF learning catalog. I found this Community of Practice so interesting and valuable that I would like to explore with you what it was about.
Understanding ADHD and Neurodiversity
Imagine your brain as a high-performance sports car—a Ferrari engine paired with bicycle brakes. This vivid metaphor illustrates the experience of living with ADHD. Your mind races with incredible speed and power, but the brakes—the mechanisms that help you control focus and impulses—struggle to keep up. Neurodiversity, a broader term, encompasses a variety of cognitive differences including ADHD, autism, dyslexia, dyspraxia, epilepsy, and other neurological assets, each bringing a unique blend of strengths and challenges to the table.
How ADHD Impacts the Brain
Consider a city where traffic lights are out of sync. Vehicles (thoughts and impulses) either rush forward uncontrollably or get stuck at intersections (distractions). This analogy helps us understand the brain’s functioning in someone with ADHD. While managing attention and time can be challenging, these same neural pathways can foster creativity, intense focus on areas of interest, and innovative thinking.
Transforming Lives Through Coaching
Effective coaching for individuals with ADHD is about facilitating the process of letting their unique wiring emerge and supporting them in identifying and using their strengths. It’s about asking insightful questions that encourage self-discovery and a personalized strategy for success. Here are some coaching questions Farah Jamil offers:
– What do you find easy or difficult?
– When do you feel most energized and when do you feel drained?
– How do you like to be challenged?
– What are your strengths and challenges?
These questions can help clients reflect on their experiences, uncover their needs, and develop strategies tailored to their unique profiles.
Recognizing Invisible Diversity
Have you considered that not all diversities are visible? ADHD and other neurodiverse conditions often go unnoticed, yet they significantly impact individuals’ lives. People with ADHD may struggle with attention and time management but can sometimes excel in creative and strategic thinking.
As Dr. Temple Grandin, a professor and autistic author, beautifully put it, “The most interesting people you’ll find are ones that don’t fit into your average cardboard box. They’ll make what they need; they will make their own boxes.”
My Personal Experience
In my personal journey as a professional coach and neurodiversity advocate with autism, I really appreciated this Community Of Practice of Farah Jamil because it allowed me to reflect on what changed in my life since I embraced my autism. Understanding and embracing my unique way of thinking and learning has empowered me to believe in myself. It allows me to focus on what I’m good at and find ways to handle things that are harder for me. Coaching that fits my needs has made a significant difference in my life, and now, equipped with my experience and the ICF coaching competencies, I support neurodivergent development while pursuing my studies to become a psychologist.
Spreading Awareness on Neurodiversity
As we explore neurodiversity within the ICF community and beyond, I am grateful for the increasing recognition of ADHD and other cognitive differences. This evolving awareness paves the road for a supportive environment where individuals of diverse cognitive profiles can thrive and contribute meaningfully.
