Imagine that within each of us lies a magnificent diamond. Not a small one, but one of immense size—thirty centimeters across, a dazzling gem with a thousand facets.
Yet, despite its inherent brilliance, this diamond is covered in layers of dust, grime, and tar.
Its facets, each capable of reflecting the spectrum of light, are obscured. The diamond is perfect, flawless at its core, but its radiance is hidden.
Some people have polished many of these facets; their inner light shines brilliantly, scattering colors with effortless grace.
Others have only managed to clean a few, and the sparkle is subtle, tentative.
And yet, beneath all this accumulated residue, every person possesses the same flawless diamond.
The difference lies not in the quality of the diamond itself—it is universally perfect—but in how many facets have been cleared, how much of the inner brilliance has been revealed.
This is where coaching enters the scene.
A coach does not create the diamond, nor does the coach judge its brilliance.
A coach partners with the client, witnessing the diamond as it is, and facilitates the process of revealing its facets, one by one, without force, without hurry.
In coaching, we operate from the principle that each individual is inherently whole, complete, and resourceful.
This aligns directly with the ICF Core Competency 2: Embodies a Coaching Mindset. To embody this mindset is to recognize the client as a fully resourceful human being, possessing innate potential, and to approach the coaching relationship with curiosity, humility, and trust in that potential.
It is to understand that coaching is not about “fixing” or “improving” someone, but about creating the conditions for their own brilliance to emerge.
Just as the diamond is perfect in its essence, so is the client. Every coaching conversation becomes a gentle but powerful act of clearing away the residue that hides the client’s light.
When I sit with a client, I imagine their diamond, fully formed yet partially obscured.
My role is to provide the space, the attention, and the reflective questioning that allows them to engage with each facet.
I might ask: “Which facet do you notice most today?” or “Where would you like to shine brighter in this moment?”
These questions are not instructions, nor are they judgments. They are invitations for the client to direct their own process, to choose which facets to polish and in what order.
This is the essence of coaching: honoring the client’s autonomy while holding a vision of their complete potential.
Some facets may have been neglected for years, covered in layers of doubt, fear, or societal expectation. A client may arrive unsure of where to begin, unaware of the diamond within. Through careful listening, curiosity, and partnership, a coach can illuminate areas of focus, help the client witness their own brilliance, and encourage the self-directed act of polishing.
And because coaching is grounded in a mindset of trust and respect, every step is led by the client’s intention, their pace, and their chosen direction. The coach is a mirror, a guide, a witness—never a manipulator, never a judge.
As more facets are cleared, the diamond begins to reflect a full spectrum of colors. The client’s energy, creativity, and insight emerge in their natural form.
Yet, coaching is not about achieving a finished product, a perfect diamond fully polished at once. It is about engaging in a process where progress is visible, celebrated, and acknowledged. Even small glimpses of light—one facet gleaming more brightly—signal growth, self-discovery, and a deeper connection to the client’s own wisdom. The coach notices, celebrates, and partners with the client to honor these moments of illumination.
When all facets are eventually revealed—if such a time ever comes—the diamond radiates pure energy.
Its brilliance is uncontainable, effortless, a reflection of its original perfection. And yet, even in partial illumination, the diamond retains its integrity and perfection.
Similarly, a coaching relationship recognizes that each client is already whole. The coaching mindset, as defined by ICF, requires the coach to maintain openness, curiosity, and an unwavering belief in the client’s capacity to navigate their own growth.
It is a mindset that resists assumptions, judgments, or premature conclusions, and instead trusts in the client’s intelligence, creativity, and self-knowledge.
In practice, embodying this mindset might look like:
-
Inviting the client to choose which areas of their life or work they want to explore, rather than prescribing a path.
-
Pausing to allow silence, reflection, or insight to emerge, trusting that clarity arises from within.
-
Recognizing when a facet is stubborn or obscured and honoring the client’s readiness to engage with it in their own time.
-
Celebrating small revelations and incremental progress, understanding that each polished facet contributes to the overall brilliance.
-
Maintaining your own self-awareness, ensuring that your curiosity, assumptions, or perspectives do not cloud the client’s process.
Ultimately, coaching is the art of partnership. It is an acknowledgment that the diamond has always existed, that perfection is inherent, and that the act of coaching is not to manufacture brilliance but to create the conditions in which it can emerge.
Each client’s diamond is unique in the facets they have polished, but universal in its perfection.
A coach’s presence, patience, and skill can make the invisible sparkle visible, guiding the client to reconnect with the vast spectrum of their own potential.
Just as there are countless diamonds in the world, each waiting to shine, so too are there countless clients, each carrying a universe of brilliance within. The coach’s task is not to transform them, but to reflect, witness, and partner in the gradual uncovering of their own radiance.
In this way, coaching becomes both an art and a practice of profound respect, rooted in the belief that all humans are whole, capable, and infinitely luminous.
